VAT deregistration and final-return support
Review whether cancellation is appropriate, resolve outstanding VAT matters and prepare the records for the final tax period confirmed by SARS.
What the work covers
Use this scope to identify what you need. Your proposal will confirm the services, records, reporting frequency and fees for your business.
- Review of cancellation grounds and outstanding obligations
- Cancellation-application support
- Schedule of assets and rights retained at cessation
- Review of applicable final-return adjustments
- Record of the SARS effective date and remaining actions
What to prepare
Tell us which records are available and where there are gaps. We can then distinguish ongoing work from any initial catch-up.
- VAT registration and filing history
- Latest VAT control account and outstanding assessments
- Asset register, stock records and acquisition costs
- Current valuations and prior input-tax treatment
- Sale agreements and the proposed closure date
Timing and responsibility
Timing depends on the records, approvals and work required. Tell us about any deadline at the start. The engagement should identify the person handling your work, the review responsibilities and any external specialist needed.
Calculate exit VAT from the applicable rules
Deregistration can trigger output tax on certain assets and rights retained by the vendor. The general valuation rule uses the lower of cost and open-market value, with statutory exceptions and adjustments. It is not a blanket charge of 15% of the market value of every asset. Review each item and its prior VAT treatment before preparing the final return.
Keep the effective date and final filing together
SARS must confirm cancellation and the final tax period. Continue the required VAT accounting and returns until that date; returns must reflect actual transactions, not automatically be nil. Cancellation is not complete merely because an application was submitted. Outstanding liabilities and obligations can prevent SARS from finalising it.
How the work progresses
- 01
Review the requirement
Identify the entity, reporting period, records and deadline.
- 02
Agree the scope
Set the outputs, responsibilities, fees and approval process.
- 03
Prepare and resolve
Work through the records and raise missing information or decisions.
- 04
Review and hand over
Complete the agreed approvals and retain the outputs and outstanding actions.
Questions before you start
Can I stop filing when I apply?
No. Check the cancellation notice and fulfil the obligations through the final period specified by SARS.
Does falling below the threshold cancel registration automatically?
No. Review eligibility and apply through the applicable process. A change in turnover alone is not a cancellation notice.
Let’s define the next step.
Tell us what you need, what is outstanding and when it matters.
